1.    Coal based thermal power stations produce nearly 70% of the electricity produced in             India and are located at:
  • Durgapur, Farakka, Bandel, Santaldih, Titagarh and Kolaghat in West Bengal,
  • Bokaro, Patratu and Chandrapura in Jharkhand,
  • Talcher in Orissa,
  • Korba and Amarkantak in Chhatisgarh,
  • Satpura and Singarauli in Madhya Pradesh,
  • Panki, Obra and Harduarganj in Uttar Pradesh,
  • Badarpur in Delhi,
  • Ukai and Gandhinagar in Gujarat,
  • Nasik and Bhuswal in Maharashtra, and,
  • Neyveli in Tamil Nadu.
2. Mineral oil and natural gas based power stations produce only 2% of the electricity produced in India. These are located at:
  • Naharkatiya and Digboi in Assam,
  • Barauni in Bihar,
  • Dhubran in Gujarat,
  • Trombay in Maharashtra,
  • Haldia and Kolkata in West Bengal.
Thermal power plants are also located at Bakreswar in West Bengal and Ramagundam in Andhra Pradesh.
